What Halcyon Is

Halcyon comes from an ancient word for calm seas after a storm — a moment when the horizon clears and you can see the way forward.

That’s what business owners and leaders need most when the demands never stop: steady ground and a clear path.

Halcyon exists to stand with the people who keep our communities moving — the builders, owners, and teams behind small businesses.
We help them move beyond constant firefighting into steady, confident growth.

We do this in two practical ways:

  • Strategic CFO — helping owners connect their numbers to their future with clarity they can trust.

  • The Leadership Lab — helping managers grow into reliable leaders in the middle of the work, where it counts most.

My Story

I’m Bill Hurston.

Early in my career, I worked as a CPA and financial professional — I knew how to deliver results.

But when I launched my first business, I learned the hard way that technical skills don’t guarantee success.

I poured energy into sales, marketing, and infrastructure — but neglected the finances, assuming they’d sort themselves out.

They didn’t. Hope is not a strategy, and without visibility into cash flow, a business can’t survive.

I also failed in leadership. I corrected more than I connected. I didn’t listen as well as I should have. And in the end, I failed my people.

Those painful lessons shaped how I serve today.

I now help others avoid those same traps — building the clarity, confidence, and systems I wish I’d had.

Because leadership isn’t about theory.

It takes practice, and it takes humility.

Why It Matters

Too many small businesses struggle — not because their owners lack talent or drive, but because the pressure is relentless and the path forward is unclear.

I know what it feels like to carry financial strain while a team counts on you.

That’s why I built Halcyon:

To help owners and leaders gain clarity on their current standing, the structure to make informed decisions, and the support to move forward with confidence.

An Invitation

If you’re a business owner or part of a leadership team, I invite you to explore the Strategic CFO and Leadership Lab pages.

See what resonates, and if you’d like to discuss further, please reach out — I’d love to hear your story.

And if you work with or support small-business owners, I’d welcome the chance to connect — especially if you share the belief that they deserve better tools, steadier guidance, and stronger support.

The Story
Behind the Lab

My name is Bill Hurston.

I didn’t start as a leadership coach.

I was a CPA, a business advisor, and a high performer who consistently delivered results.

But when I had to build and lead my team in my first business, everything changed.

I thought I was ready. I wasn’t.
I was too sharp when I should’ve coached.
I corrected more than I connected—and it cost me.

Through pressure and painful mistakes, I learned what books couldn’t teach:
Leadership takes practice.

That’s why I built the Leadership Lab—
for first-time and mid-level managers who need structure, feedback, and space to grow in real-time.

Because leadership today is messy.
The pressure’s constant. The expectations are high.
And too many good people are still figuring it out on their own.

You don’t need more content.
You need to practice what matters—before the stakes get higher.

If this sounds familiar, let’s talk.
